Three Great Ways for Chiropractors to Create a Passive, Recurring Income

When you decided to become a chiropractor you probably weren’t thinking about how financially vulnerable a practice that depended solely on patient visits would leave you. 

But as the COVID-19 pandemic has clearly shown us, it definitely does!! 

The solution is to find ways to create a passive recurring income – one that does not depend on patient visits.  Here are three great ways to for chiropractors to do just that!

Passive Income Generating Idea #1:
Sell Supplements Online

If you currently sell supplements out of your office you already know how much these sales can add to your bottom line each month. 

But if you are only selling them from your office you are almost certainly losing sales - both to other health care practitioners and to online sellers like Amazon.

Selling supplements online can increase your sales and keep patients purchasing from you rather than someone else.

There are a couple of different options for doing this. . .

1. Place a Supplement Store on Your Website

If you already have a website many of the higher end supplement companies including Metagenics, Nutri-Dyne and Designs for Health will add a store or allow you to place a link to a store on your website.

This makes it convenient for patients to get their refills, and also gives them access to a wider range of supplements than you can carry in your office.  And that makes it much more likely that they will continue to buy - and buy more - from you. 

You also don’t need to stock inventory and, since the supplement company handles credit card processing and shipping (and sends you a commission each month) you don’t need to deal with those things either.

2. Use an Online Supplement Dispensary

An even better option than placing a supplement store on your website is to use an online supplement dispensary.

Online dispensaries carry a ton of supplements from a variety of top-of-the-line manufacturers. You can sign patients up and add the supplements you want for them, but some dispensaries also allow patients to select supplements themselves.  You then receive a commission on the items your patients purchase.

I use Full Script.com and their commission is 35%, which is quite good. But you can also give patients a discount, either across the board or on an individual basis.

This ability to discount supplements allows practitioners to compete with sellers like Amazon, while ensuring that your patients still receive high quality supplements.

Full Script will send reminders to patients to re-order and also has an auto-order option. This is great because reminders and auto-orders can significantly increase the amount of supplements you sell.

In addition, you can indicate your favorite supplements for various conditions such as bone health, cardiovascular health, sleep etc., allowing patients to select supplements following your general recommendations.

Passive Income Generating Idea #2:
Create a Money-Making Website

You probably already have a website for your practice.  But, other than letting prospective patients know who you are and how to contact you, it probably isn’t making any money for you.

As the name implies, a money-making website is one that is specifically designed to make money – and much of that money can represent passive income.  How you monetize your website will depend on the type of site you use.

If you already have a website for your practice you can monetize it by using it to sell e-books, a video series (for instance, a series of classes on back or neck care), or a newsletter. 

Consider a Membership Offering

You might also consider adding a membership offering to your website. Membership offerings can be for content,  group or individual coaching or learning specific skill sets on a subscription basis. They can also offer discounts. For instance, you could set up a site that would allow your patients to  purchase a certain number of adjustments in advance for a discounted price.

While a discount membership will not free you from the need to see patients, it will help stabilize your income and keep your schedule filled.  It will also help eliminate competition from other chiropractors  since once a patient purchases a package from you they aren’t likely to spend more to see someone else.

Content, coaching and skills membership sites require more work than a simple discount membership, but they have the advantage of freeing you from the need to see patients. 

And, since there are no office visits required they also have the advantage of allowing you to market to people who live outside your local community (although you could incorporate in-office classes into your membership offering).

Create a New Website

If you don’t have a website for your practice or you don’t want to monetize the site you have, no worries. You can create a money-making website from scratch.

These sites can focus on just about anything - from your hobbies or side interests to daily accounts or blogs showing how you go through your day. How you monetize your website will depend upon the type of site you start but e-books, newsletters, affiliate links or advertisements are all possibilities.

Passive Income Generating Idea #3:
Add Essential Oils to Your Inventory

The third way to free yourself from financial dependency on patient visits is to use and sell essential oils – and then invite patients and colleagues to do the same.  

This is my favorite way to generate additional income because it has the greatest income potential. In addition, essential oils are a great fit for holistic health care practices:  they allow you to expand your supplement line, they have the potential to bring new patients into your office practice and can even turn your co-workers and competitors into partners. 

Let’s take a closer look at each of these.

 Essential Oils are a Great Fit for Holistic Health Care Practices

Although the FDA does not allow claims that essential oils can treat any disease or symptoms of a disease, that doesn’t mean they don’t work!

Essential oils have been used by healers throughout many cultures for thousands of years, and are still used by healthcare practitioners today. 

In fact, the essential oil company I work with is establishing integrative medicine clinics  throughout the US that combine traditional allopathic and holistic medicine – and incorporate the use of essential oils. I personally use essential oils to help with digestive upsets, nausea and car sickness, for respiratory support during the winter months, as first aid for minor scrapes and burns, for stress relief, to uplift mood, to help with sleep – even to repel insects!

And Patients Love Essential Oils!  I have one patient who came in with a headache, saw the essential oils on my desk, grabbed a bottle of peppermint oil and immediately began slathering her head and neck with it!

Essential Oils Can Greatly Expand Your Sales Inventory

Essential oils are used much like supplements and are often preferred by patients. You can sell them out of your office, and you can also sell them through links in your newsletter or on your website.

The latter is a great option because it allows you to sell many more products than you might have available in your office inventory.

But that’s not all.

In addition to the oils themselves, you can also add a variety of all-natural, toxin-free essential oil products to your sales inventory.  These include fragrant soaps, shampoo, fluoride-free toothpaste, alcohol-free mouthwash, toxin-free laundry detergent and household cleaners – even essential oil-based skin care and “spa” items.

Of course, you'll also want to use these items yourself - both in your home and in your office. Diffuse them in your waiting and treatment rooms to help relax patients and keep everything smelling great. And be sure to incorporate them into your treatment protocols.

Essential Oils Can Bring New Patients into Your Office

Using the oils in your office is a great way to “advertise” them to your patients.  Another way to introduce people to essential oils is by offering classes either in your office, on-line, or both.

In-office classes have the potential to bring new patients into your regular practice: You can advertise the classes and you also can also hold a raffle for free essential oil products.(In exchange for their email give each attendee one entry for showing up for class and an additional entry for each person they bring to class with them.  This will help you stay in contact with your current patients - and introduce new people to you and your office).

Of course you can also offer classes on line, and can incorporate them into a membership offering. 

Essential Oils Can Turn Your Co-Workers and Competitors into Partners

Finally, by introducing other chiropractors and health care providers to essential oils, you have the opportunity to turn your competitors into your partners: When they make money from essential oils, you will make money as well!

Quality Counts - And So Does Income Potential!

As a health care provider it is critically important to choose the right essential oil company. That's because essential oil quality and compensation can vary widely from one company to another

Although essential oils are popular and can be found just about everywhere, an estimated 75-80% of the oils currently on the market are adulterated - including those from most of the leading essential oil companies.

Many essential oils are also poorly sourced and inadequately tested. Poor sourcing, adulteration and lack of proper testing can affect both the efficacy -- and the safety -- of essential oils. 

In addition, company compensation plans are not all the same. The company that I use actually has 5 different ways to make money – including corporate profit sharing! (As an independent health care provider did you ever think you would have the opportunity to participate in corporate profit sharing plans?)
